Giving Thanks…and Respect

For many Native American nations, Thanksgiving is recognized as a day of mourning. Appropriately, some tribes fast to demonstrate dissent and agency. I think this is a dignified measure that speaks volumes, and am going to join them this year out of solidarity and respect.

On Thursday, November 24th, 2016, I will be fasting for 24 hours (starting midnight the previous evening).

If you would like to support my fast, please donate $5 to Pine Ridge, one of the most impoverished Native American reservations in the U.S. For the Oglala Lakota who were placed on the reservation, domestic violence, alcoholism, and suicide rates are high, while unemployment hovers around 80% (U.S. Census 2010).

Please send a check directly to:

My thanks to you, compatriots and friends. Happy Holidays!
